Let me start off my official first review by saying that I have a Ghostface tattoo. I’m a huge fucking fan of the Scream franchise. It is my favorite horror franchise by far.
This was the first installment I was able to see on the big screen as a first watch, and I will say that I wasn’t disappointed. Of course, I was hoping for a guest appearance from Matthew Lillard (Stu Macher) as a Ghostface reveal. Instead, I was satiated with not only seeing Samara Weaving as the first kill of the movie, but a return of Hayden Panettiere to the series.
Overall, I’ll just say that I liked this movie. The main reasons for the popularity of the series are the new addition of the next generation of Woodsboro victims and the return of previous cast members. I’m enjoying seeing Jenna Ortega and Melisa Barrera as our main final girls. But I also am liking the returning side characters played by Jasmin Savoy Brown and Mason Gooding.
The deaths in this movie are not all knife by any means. In this installment we get to see guns, bricks, glass shards, and gravity as murder weapons. It’s a nice change of pace because we really don’t know how far Ghostface is going to go for a kill.
So, let’s get into the real shit. Courtney Cox is a bad bitch and remains alive as a legacy character. I fuck with that. I hate that legacy characters in long-lasting series are mainly targeted in the later installments for a quick pick off. Her fight scene was great. Her character is seasoned with Ghostface fights at this point in the series, so her ability to use Ghostface’s own tool (his phone) against him, was amazing and in character.
The only complaint I’ll voice for the movie is that my fiancée and I were able to guess who the killers were in the first twenty minutes. Of course, our guesses were thrown off with the whole fake dead roommate trope. And by now we know that there is almost always more than one killer. And let me just say that I think the opportunity to have Hayden revealed as the killer would have been great, but I do like that her character was looked at to be a prime suspect in the final reveal scene to confuse the audience in the last minute.
My favorite thing about Scream 6 was the Ghostface shrine revealed halfway through the movie containing various pieces of evidence from all of the Ghostface murders. Knives, outfits, and even the fucking masks that each Ghostface wore displayed in a museum setting. They even have the shattered TV that fell on Stu’s head in the original. Like I said in the beginning, I’m a huge fan so that was just *chef’s kiss*.
If you’re a fan of Scream, go watch it. If you’re just looking for a “scary” movie for date night, also watch it. (It’s not scary)
