Here’s another Sunday watch for you. I’ve been in an early 2000’s vibe when it comes to choosing movies. This one is a good watch if you’re looking for something to watch with your significant other.
With Ben Stiller and Drew Barrymore as our leads, this comedy makes me laugh every time. Liz had never seen it before of course. She enjoyed the dynamic between the two leads, as I’m sure they reminded her of us.
Fun fact, this movie was released titled as “Our House” in Ireland and “The Old Lady Must Go” in Poland.
The movie follows a married couple buying their first home, (Stiller and Barrymore) which happens to be a duplex. An old, Irish, woman lives in the upstairs apartment of the duplex. She is portrayed by the late Eileen Essell. The couple buy it anyways, thinking that the older lady would be a quiet tenant, but they find out soon enough they were wrong in judgement.
With rent control in place, the couple have no choice but to take matters into their own hands to get rid of their obnoxious tenant. How far will they go?
I give Essell a lot of praise for how she portrayed the character of Mrs. Connelly. She’s hilarious in her line delivery and movement acting.
The quirkiness of Stiller and Barrymore make them relatable to the audience and favorable to watch throughout the plotline. It’s a dynamic you wouldn’t expect to see but I think this movie does their acting chemistry a lot of justice.
This movie is funnier to older audiences. I think kids could find some parts funny, but it’s definitely targeted for more mature humored audiences. Maybe hold off on watching it as a family and save it for date night.
“Duplex” is only an hour and a half long and it’s currently streaming on Paramount+
Liz thought it was funny so it’s a win for me.
