I can’t believe Liz watched this with me and I cannot believe she laughed at it. Multiple times. So you know this one is funny.
My friends and I used to have this running joke that we would initiate any new girlfriends with this movie. We’d play it for them, and if they didn’t laugh at a certain scene (which I will not disclose) that they weren’t worthy of being with. Liz made me wait three years to watch this, since she thought she would fail the initiation. She passed.
Hot Rod follows our protagonist, Rod, an amateur stuntman player by Andy Samberg. The rest of the supporting cast includes Danny McBride, Bill Hader, and Isla Fisher. They make up his stuntman crew.
That cast lineup should sell the movie enough for you to watch.
Rod has a tradition of fighting his stepfather to gain his respect. Yup. Fighting. He never wins though. And now his stepfather has a heart condition that requires surgery that his family can’t afford. That also means no fighting. In an effort to win his stepfathers respect, by kicking his ass in a fight, he decides to make a stunt tape to raise money for the surgery.
This movie is hilarious. It has that off beat comedy that I’m very fond of. The comedy that comes out of no where. It’s definitely more wacky and doesn’t really take itself too seriously.
It’s one of my favorites that I have to watch a few times a year. I’m sure you’ll like it. It’s streaming on Paramount Plus.
