I have been BEGGING for Liz to watch this with me since the start of our relationship almost three years ago.
This movie is just funny and nostalgic. From the soundtrack down to the cast, this is just ultimately a fun watch.
Let’s talk about the cast. This movie stars Alexis Vega (Carmen from Spy Kids). But alongside her we have a supporting cast that includes Jane Lynch, Sean Faris, Mika Boorem, Evan Peters, and Steve fucking Carell.
The movie follows Vega’s character, Julie, who has just finished eighth grade and is having a sleepover with three other girls. Her best friend Hannah (Boorem) is set to move the following day. So this is their last chance to hangout. It is also the night of some high-school dance. I guess an end of the year dance.
The popular girls at their school are also having a rival slumber party the same night. Julie does her best with Hannah and their other two friends to have an awesome night when one of the popular girls, Staci (Sara Paxton) crashes their sleepover and challenges them to a scavenger hunt. One sleepover versus the other sleepover. The winner of the scavenger hunt gets to claim their lunch spot in high-school the following year at apparently the coolest water fountain. The losers sit by the dumpsters.
This movie is wacky and you can’t take the plot line too seriously. Some of the scavenger hunt items include getting pictures with blind dates at a club, stealing boxers from the hottest guy in high-school, and swapping clothes on a mannequin at an outlet store. Seems like a lot for some fifteen year old girls that can barely drive.
The best part?
They have to sneak out of the house to participate in the scavenger hunt and the entire time they’re being followed by Steve Carell who is portraying a security officer that patrols the neighborhood and a group of skater dweebs led by Evan Peters.
I mentioned the soundtrack because one of my favorite bands makes an appearance not only on the sound track but in the movie itself at the dance.
This is a cute and fun nostalgic watch so give it a shot. It’s currently streaming on Amazon Prime.
